This shot is taken just off the coast of Seasalter
looking east towards the outskirts of Whitstable. On the right,
the broad expanse of Seasalter Levels (marshes) extends to the
uplands of the Yorkletts village area. As described by Brian Smith
in his article "The
History of Whitstable Shoreline from 1287",
the Levels were floodable areas until the construction of the sea
wall and the implementation of various drainage schemes.
Apart from a smattering of holiday homes along the
sea defences and a handful of caravan parks, little
contstruction has taken place on the Levels themselves. The urban
area of Whitstable begins at Blue Anchor Corner where the clay
banks of Preston Parade start to provide a natural sea defence.
