Carnival Photos by Peter
Dalrymple
The carnival took place last weekend... while I was in Devon
and awaiting the Olympics! Fortunately, Peter Dalrymple
forwarded some photos for the web site and this enables us to
provide a flavour of the event.
Of course, it isn't easy providing a commentary on an event
that I didn't winess. But, 'ere we go...

By far the tallest carnival entry was the Whitstable Community
Giant (Captain Sam).... before he flew to Beijing with
the Great Britain basketball team.
Well, that should prove a shock for the Americans!
A lot of work went into the super float below and I
understand that it won a much deserved prize.
I am betting on the characters being (from left to
right)..... Little John, Maid Marion, Will Scarlett and
Robin Hood.... before they joined up with the British
kendo, archery and fencing teams.
I never realised that
Robin Hood looked that good when I was a kid.

... and the Margate Carnival Court (left). |
The vehicle below could have been a panda car from the local
constabulary.....

On the other hand it might have been the guys of
the fire brigade from Borken - our twin town in Germany.
There was no such identity crisis with the Second
Whitstable Sea Scouts unit below.....

It's my favourite band because I just love the
sound of flutes and drums. Mind you, I am going to need help to name the
friendly group below....

For the moment, I'll plump for the Civil
Service Heavy Metal band..... until someone puts me right.
One of nicest carnival queen floats belonged to
our neighbours Herne Bay....

© Peter Dalrymple
It deployed a simple but effective 'film set'
theme in the striking hues of red, white and black. And just to
show that we don't begrudge Herne Bay the right to borrow
the Whitstable Town FC colours, Miss Herne Bay carried off one of
our trophies.

Meanwhile, Ashford also plumped for simplicity.....

Even simpler was the float of Henry VIII.....

... but he made up for it... in the quantity
of wives.... and some impressive outfits.
We'll leave the carnival with this shot of the
Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway entry....

Carnival Comments...
Peter's photos have brought some carnival memories for Tony
Pope in Maidstone....
| We lived in Whitstable during the 1950's and remember
carnivals at that time. My father, who played an
accordion,
appeared one year on a "float" depicting a gypsy
theme, for the "Alberta Holiday Camp" and I have
a couple of b/w photo's. The Alberta Holiday Caravan site
was at Seasalter. Father played (accordion) evenings
entertaining the holiday makers.
I even made an appearance one year with the Whitstable
Boy Scouts (Mrs Holdens Own).

Thanks, Tony. The Alberta camp still exists but I believe that
is now part of a chain. It always seemed to be the liveliest of
the local camps with a range of facilities including a swimming
pool.
I wonder if you have seen Cliff Cuttelle's 1st Whitstable Scout
photo of the 1950s. It is included in our Chat Column for w/c
7/7/08. (Click
here to view). I am hoping to include a range of carnival
memory articles in the near future.
