Introduction
The other day, Derek Weatherall very kindly kicked our Snow
Section off with a series of photos and now the torch has been
picked up Becca Newlyn - daughter of Derek! Let's take a look.
Railway Avenue
The shots below bring back some memories for me as
they were taken from the house next door to where I was brought
up. The first shows Teynham Hill subway....

Thee second captures the nearby junction of
Railway Avenue and Station Road....

They were taken yesterday (Friday 8 January 2010).
As you can see, as main route, Railway Avenue has been salted and
is reasonably clear but Station Road presents some difficulties.
This is typical of the situation across Whitstable.
The shot below was taken at the junction of
Railway Avenue and Cromwell Road with the sun starting to set....

Wildlife
I am no ornithologist... in fact, I am not even
sure I can spell it. However, I am sure that someone can tell us
the species of in Beccy's super shot below.....

My first reaction was.... Thrush! However, there
aren't enough speckles and, so, for the timebeing I will plump for
a female blackbird.
Blizzards are forecast for later for this evening
and freezing temperatures are expected to last for at least
another 7-9 days. Bird organisations are appealing to the public
to ensure that birds have access to sufficient food. If we have
any experts who can tell us the best way to help, perhaps they
would write to our Visitors Book.
Monument
There is nothing quite like the Monument and
its surroundings.....

Endowed School
Whilst many schools have closed during the
snowfalls, Beccy tells me that the Endowed has continued.....

Although kids of the the new millennium won't
thank me for saying so, it was the best time to go to school in
the 1950s! Okay, so the odd teacher couldn't make it but we all
mucked in and playtimes were wonderful.
Well done, the Endowed.
Old Railway Line
The old Canterbury-Whitstable railway line was
quite a picture yesterday (Friday 8 January).....

... and the snow shows little sign of meting. The
low daytime temperatures have kep surface water frozen even in the
deepest of ditches.....

We would like to thank Becca for taking the
time and trouble to share these winter scenes with us.
