There is nothing quite like a sailing ship at sea.... and here, we thank Dave Jordan for this lovely shot from the Swale Match of 1985.

It features the barge Portlight and it was a dramatic moment as Dave explains.....

"Taking the photograph almost proved to be  a disaster. The bowsprit of the Portlight came across our stern. In fact, some  four feet of it was inboard. My pal, who was at the helm, took rapid evasive action. I recollect the skipper of the barge shouting 'Please move out of the way'.... or, at least, that's what he meant to say"

- Dave Jordan .

Of course, there are more relaxed times as in Peter Dalrymple's photo of another barge - Steve Norris's Greta (below).

The Greta shot is just one of a lovely selection of photos taken and kindly made available to Simply Whitstabe by Peter.

The lovingly restored Greta runs excursions from Whitstable harbour and Peter has captured some of the vessel's modern day exploits to landmarks in the estuary.

Here we feature dramatic shots of  visits to the Red Sands army forts off the coast of Tankerton.

The photo on the right shows the approach to the forts. The one below was taken by Steve Norris from the top of one of the towers....

Our final shots were taken during the time of the Barge match in the year 2000. An un-identified barge returns to the harbour at low tide

As mentioned in our introduction to our Thames Barge feature, the design of the barge enables it to operate in shallow water...
