This is where I get into some deep water with Peter's photos. As I explained, in our
background text the Swale Smack and Sailing Barge Match includes
a wide range of vessels and on this page we feature a selection.
I can identify some but not all! Can anyone help out?

Above: Well, I might as well start with one that I do know. I am pretty sure that this is
a Dutch Barge. Such barges appeared on the scene in the late 19th century and they
were used as a form of transport on the canals of Holland.

Above: Dutch Barges come in many different shapes and sizes
.... and I am backing  this vessel to be another example...

Above: Now things start to get a bit beyond me! This one is the 'Lilian'
... and I am going to call it a powered yacht and place it in the
'Traditional Steam or Motor' class of the Swale Match. However, is
the Lilian steam or motor? Over to you!

Left: Oh dear, now this really is getting
complicated! I think  I will place
the Estelle  in the
'Traditional
Bermudan Rigged' class... and
then run away.

If a 'know it all' knows it should
be placed elsewhere..... please
 let me  know.

Yes! I should know what CK273 (right)
is all about. However, having been
ticked off in the past for not knowing
my ketch from my smack or my yawl
from my bawley, I may ahve to
rely on our readers!

 Left & Below: Let me
make a fool of myself first!
I have a feeling that ketches, yawls
and smacks have two masts - a main
mast and a mizzen. So...
can I allocate the title 'bawley'
to all these little craft

Whatever the outcome of that particular discussion there is no doubt that the
Swale Smack and Sailing Barge Match brings some much appreciated activity,
variety and colour to the Swale estuary and North Kent coast...
