The Junior Youth Fellowship wasn't just an inward looking
organisation and it laid on entertainment for the local people as Bill
Dancer explains.....
|
The JYF put on a Christmas Pageant in All Saints Hall every
year. This was Directed by Miss Pickford who lived with her
parents in the house that used to be situated adjacent to the
Coastal Road (aka Thanet Way) and the SE corner of the Church
Street Playing Fields. It was demolished to make way for the
improved Coastal Road (which has yet to appear) and, with it,
went a wonderful Walnut and Medlar tree - the fruits of which we
enjoyed for years.
The photo below shows the pageant.....

It also took an active part in some of the town's main events. Bill
Dancer's comments below elaborate and he also mentions the name of a
clergyman who served for Whitstable for many years....
|
The photograph below shows the
JYF entry "The Local Rag" in the carnival I would guess 1949....

Rag" - Carnival 1949

The "Swiss Admiral"
mentioned on the side refers to Mr.Donovan the Town Beadle who paraded in full
uniform along the promenade and was known to us by this grand title .
The second photo and prize
winner from the year of Kon Tiki is another entry with much the
same cast except Madelaine Buckner is the attractive young lady sitting bottom
centre on the raft and Canon Cyril E. Wainforth is standing behind the
float.....
Unfortunately, I do not have a
photo of my favourite which was entitled "A Hole in the Road"
featuring several WUDC employees above a hole "studying the situation"
and one down the hole apparently "actually" or, at least,
"appearing capable" of productive movement
.

Now, it's possible that you are scratching your head and
wondering which year was Kon Tiki
year. Well, six men set sail on their balsa wood craft at Callao in Peru
and landed on the island of Raroia in Polynesia just 101 days later. And
it all happened in..... 1947!
