Names from the Past...
In the coming weeks, I suspect that our readers will be able
to provide some names to fit the photos on our Sea Scout
memories pages. Cliff Cuttelle has started things off with
this message from
his home in Thailand....

Hi
Dave,
I do not know if the following is
of interest to you, but it concerns the new pictures
that you have put up on the Sea Scouts.
I had a word with dad (Charlie
Cuttelle). He is now 92 but still has a good memory.
He joined the Sea Scouts in 1925/6. The following were
in the band.....
-
Harold
Mount
-
Cyril
Marsh – big drum
-
Jack
Marsh – bugle
-
Charlie
Harman
-
Jack
Sharp
-
Erik
Creber (who dad thinks ran the troop then)
-
Ken
Treliving
-
Dick
Leadwall
-
George
Beer – side drum
-
Charlie
Cuttelle – bugle
-
Ken
Zederburg - bugle
-
Shirley
Harnett – pipe
-
Ken
Palmer – pipe he thinks
Cyril Marsh was still on the drum
when I was in the Sea Scouts. I joined in 1955, leaving
in 1961 (ish). Ken Zederberg likewise still played along
with Shirley and Ken Palmer.

Cliff's list actually identifies a key feature of the Sea
Scout band. Whilst they often performed as a "drum
and bugle" outfit, they also played "drum
and flute". In fact, some band members carried both
a bugle and flute and switched between the two for different
tunes. I seem to recall that flutes were often wedged down socks
while the bugles were being played.
"Drum and flute" bands are less
common and, for me, much nicer. I would also argue
that they have a greater connection with the sea! |
