Sea Scouts on Parade....
The Sea Scouts have always taken part in a wide
range of parades around town but, to date, we have just one
photo...

This may well date from the 1950s as it certainly
captures a background that matches that period! The
scouts are taking a salute and I presume that the dignitaries are
gathered out of shot - on the concourse of the old Regal cinema
(now Somerfield supermarket). The building on
the right is Davey's store - shrouded in canvas blinds and with
wooden gates across the twin entrances. The shop sold cloth, linen,
curtains, bedding and womenswear. It even had a small menswear shop next door. In
fact you can just about make out the "Daveys" sign
over the window of the men's "annex". The
Davey's menswear department actually had a connection with the Sea
Scouts. Scoutmaster, Ken Treliving, managed the men's department for
many years. The department moved to Harbour Street some time
around the 1960s and Ken eventually assumed ownership.
