John
Conley... Most Celebrated?
Who was the best player ever to wear the red and
white of Whitstable? Arguments may rage between fans of
different eras but amongst the senior citizens of the
Gas Works End, one name will spring most readily to
mind... that of John Conley.
On this page, we feature an article by Norman Fox
that appeared in the Independent on Sunday shortly after
John died in January 1991. It was passed to us by Ian
Johnson and reproduced here with kind permission of The
Independent.

'10
Matches for Grimsby'
Who was the most popular player to play for the
town? Again, the question will cause some friendly
arguments. However, amongst the suggestions you will
find the name of goalkeeper John 'Bonny' Archer.
Bonny might also have been the most successful
player to emerge from the Belmont. This article by Ian Johnson
documents Bonny's Football League at Grimsby and
explains why, at just eighteen years old, it was all too
brief.
