Above: Looking towards West Beach with Marine Terrace on the left and the tall terrace of Wave Crest in the distance. This area has been the subject of some controversy in recent times. The Oyster Company hoped to re-instate the old Red Spider cafe just beyond the line of beached yachts. It was opposed by some groups and planning permission has recently been refused.

One of the arguments against the Red Spider proposal centres on the fact that this area has been deemed a site of  Special Scientific Interest,  a Special Protected Area and an important location for  a variety of bird life. I am only guessing but I would imagine that there might be a few people performing somersaults over these decrees... even if they wouldn't know a lapwing from an ostrich or an orchid from a michaelmas daisy. Such is the strange world of planning applications and protest. ;-)

Add these scientific and ornithological demands to the commercial and leisure usages we have seen during our stroll along the waterfront and I reckon Whitstable has set up a battleground for many more disputes to come!!!!
