As at most schools, day to day activities were celebrated
with an annual Prize Giving ceremony. Now thanks to Linda
Farrington, we can get a real feel for the event with scans of
the program for 1960.
I am sure that you will want to recall your own
memories... but I will draw out a few key points as we scuff
through the pages.
Let's flip inside the front cover to pick up an
overview and some key names....
We can see something of the structure of the Sir
William Nottidge. The school appointed both a Head Boy and Head
Girl and they faced the daunting task of making a speech. There
was a flourishing school choir and quite a formal choice of music
including the School Hymn. Political Correctness had yet to arrive
and, so, the event reached its finale with the National Anthem....
and a rendition of The Trout! Slipping on a page,
we get a real feel for the range of prizes....
Goodness, gracious! My brother's in there! Both
attainment and effort were rewarded......
... and these are things that can easily be
forgotten in the modern day clammer for GCES in the A-C range. Mind you certificates were celebrated with
pride....
The list of Trophies is fascinating.... and not
just for who won them. The names of the sponsors will be bring
back a few memories as they include a number of local businesses
and well known characters. It is also interesting to note the
importance that the house system played in the celebration of
achievement. I have always believed that people have to learn to
be part of a team to cope with life in the outside world.
Individual achievement is not the only part of learning.
